THE NUCLEAR SUBLIME

We have no way to eliminate nuclear waste. The best we can do is bury it deep underground and hope it’ll decay over time. The estimated time it takes for nuclear waste to decay is thousands to millions of years. Which begs the question: how do we warn future generations where we buried it? There were many proposed ideas. Genetically modified glow-in-the-dark cats. Atomic priesthoods. Physical markers convey the image of a “shunned land”. None can guarantee longevity in the face of deep time. The sublime is an overwhelming, incomprehensible, and threatening force. Greatness beyond comprehension, beyond measure and calculation; it is humanity subsumed. This project is an exploration of deep time and its relationship with humanity’s futile attempts of control.
